A copy is also being sent by post
I am writing to you to bring your attention to a very difficult situation that I and my family have had to endure over the last 5 years. We currently have a caravan on your site at highfield grange PLOT NUMBER 755
First of all let me introduce who we are and the people involved in this tragic episode that has happened in our life over the last 5 years. I am Mickey Pike and have a beautiful wife Samantha (Nee: McLaughlin) we have 4 lovely young Children who are Mickey aged 10, Daisy aged 9, Frankie aged 8 and Dolly aged 6.
In December 2005 my Wife and I purchased an 8 Berth Willerby Caravan from E-bay. This caravan was situated in St Osyth, Clacton-on-sea, Essex on the SEAWICK Caravan Site (Plot Number 351).
During our first Summer Break we had no issues at all; the family had a wonderful time especially our youngest son Frankie who unfortunately suffers from Autism. This holiday park gave our young boy a new lease of life as he had the freedom to ride his bike, walk around in a safe and secure environment and get to know the other children from the various other families on site at the time. The Caravan site holds its annual “Talent Contest” involving all of the Children.
On one particular occasion, 3 of our children decided to take part and we can honestly say, that nothing more was pleasing for us was when young Frankie got up to sing in front of the whole of the Holiday park Seeing Frankie with his new found drive and confidence
, Samantha and I then decided that we would do our best for our Children and would take our children to seawick at any given opportunity the reason being our current home, which is situated in Enfield , is in the vicinity of a main road that is notorious for accidents. Eventually we decided that it was in our families’ best interests to move to SEAWICK permanently and sent our Children to the local schools in the St Osyth area.
Shortly after we moved to the Site on a permanent basis the site was purchased by Park Holidays. Whilst we were cautious of the change of ownership and found that the company wasn’t necessarily as sociable as the previous owners, they were far more professional in their attitude when dealing with holiday makers such as ourselves; we decided that as long as our Children were happy then we would continue to live there.
As I previously explained about Frankie, he suffers from Autism which unfortunately makes him a very trusting and impressionable young boy who gets on incredibly well with most people but unfortunately due to his Autism he does from time to time find himself subject to bullying but that alas is a sad fact of life that in time we hope he will overcome.
In the summer of 2007 when we were at the site, my wife was just doing everyday things within our Caravan and our young son Frankie was playing outside with some of the other Holiday maker’s children. Strangely my Wife or I failed to notice that there was a teenager hovering around the group.
During this time Frankie must have come back into the Caravan and my Wife just happened to walk into young Frankie’s bedroom and stood horrified at what she saw taking place before her very eyes. To her horror she saw this youth raping our son Frankie My wife screamed in horror and I rushed to see what was wrong, a youth ran past me as I got to my wife through her tears she explained what happened, so I gave chase following him to a nearby caravan where I met this youth Mother, and after explaining to her what had happened, she herself was distraught at this revelation, as I recounted to her what my wife had told me. The Site Manageress was informed immediately and the Police were called. They arrived within a short space of time and the lad was arrested, taken to the local police station and was Charged
. As you can imagine Frankie was in a terrible terrible state due to the severity of the incident, he had to be interviewed by the Police. and With Frankie being Autistic this did prove very difficult for Frankie & the police to form an Interview.
In the lead up to the Court case and due to the horrific nature of the incident Frankie went back into a deep shell and refused to talk to anyone. All the progress, improvements in his sociable skills and new found confidence had diminished. All he wanted to do was stay in the caravan in the company of either me or Samantha.
We experienced a lot of problems when we wanted him to go to his room, which is unfortunately where the abuse took place. We have after many months of helping and encouraging Frankie managed to get him out of the Caravan and back into Society but only if either Samantha or I’m with him. We did find that despite Frankie’s reluctance to leave our side he did manage to bond with the Caravan site Mascot “Loopy”, who incidentally is a large Fluffy Rabbit, we believe this bonding came because the Rabbit didn’t appear to be human so therefore Frankie didn’t see this character as a threat. The person within the costume took Frankie under her wing knew of the problems surrounding Frankie and was able to involve him in the activities that she took an active role in. This helped Frankie immensely and we were so happy to see him smiling and laughing again even if this was for a short while.
Regarding the court case involving this terrible incident the aforementioned Individual was found guilty and was placed on the Sex Offenders register. During the case it came to light that this individual had problems of his own and was given various Legal injunctions were put in place by the Judge presiding over the case.
Since this legal outcome, we as a family have been trying to rebuild our life and especially that of Frankie’s. Up until this point we tried to turn things around and did our best to return our lives back to normality as best we could under these almost impossible circumstances.
Sadly we did experience that not a solitary member of the Park Holidays management Staff showed any kind of Sympathy or Compassion towards Frankie or us as a family, even though they were fully aware of the circumstances.
However we did our best to put a brave face on things and not let obstacles in our path get in the way of how we were hurting on the inside. We did this not just for our own sake as a family but that of our young son Frankie as well………
Our two little girls Dolly and Daisy were often found to be playing in the swings area of SEAWICK and more often than not you could hear there screams of laughter and joy that was shred between them in this play area. This was indeed so much apparent that the Resort’s official photographer decided to photo our two girls with our permission and place them in the Official Resort Brochure that was to be printed in time for the following summer, and even to be displayed on the company website (www.parkholidaysuk.com). They can be seen laying on the grass laughing
We are a Christian family and thanked God for helping us through these traumatic times and thankfully our life stared to get back to some kind of normality the Children had returned to School and outside of their schooling they were very happy within the site itself both playing with Children
After the incident involving Frankie, Samantha and I regrettably split up due to the impact and strain that affected us, our relationship dwindled. However I would go to the Caravan every weekend to see our Children and Samantha, during this time in my life I also had Heart Attack and am still on medication to this day that is taken on a daily basis. The doctors put the condition down to stress
In 2008 we were informed by a friend about a recent new caravan owner that was said to have been involved in a few cases of Child abuse at his last
Address but whilst my Wife and I listened to what we were told we have always believed that rumours are not to be taken out of context. We have always brought our children up in such ways that not only do they Not Speak with Strangers but also to inform us immediately if they feel uncomfortable with any situation and talk to either Samantha or myself with any problems and that we could talk them through together.
We noticed that this individual had made a point of befriending many people within the site itself especially those with young families and he would get people to do odd jobs in he’s caravan and often help them with odd jobs around their caravan. We felt that this could be a ruse just to get near the children and did our best to maintain a distance between our family and this certain individual.
One family in particular that we got to know very well had a young daughter who this man had apparently befriended and got very close to, and one evening she came over to our table (within the Clubhouse) very distraught condition in tears and appearing very scared. This girl recounted the events to my wife and me, so we consequently contacted her mother whom the girl recounted her version of events to and in turn the on duty bar Manageress was informed as to the Nature of the Incident. The manageress decided against informing the Police and convinced the parents of this little girl that steps would be taken to prevent this type of incident happening again. Whilst the parents of this little girl were very unhappy with manageress’s decision it was reluctantly accepted and they hoped to return to normality.
A few weeks later, we happened to be parking our car when we saw another couple that we didn’t know but had seen on the site and noticed that the wife was in a hysterical state so Samantha and I popped over to see if we could help in anyway and try to comfort her. Upon speaking with her we discovered that this same individual had been touching her young daughter inappropriately and that she herself had been to the local Police Station to report the incident. This individual was later arrested and released from the Police station and upon his release he went looking for the father of the girl armed with a Golf Club, The Individual concerned was also arrested for this but was not charged for either of the assaults or for the trauma that he had inflicted upon the daughter of the family. Since the Individuals release the Family have now left the Caravan Site where this incident took place and alas neither Samantha nor I have seen or heard from them since,
A month or so later after this particular event I happened to be walking through the Clubhouse when I noticed my daughter Daisy was sitting with this individual and a friend of hers having something to eat. that this person had brought for them I noticed that this Individual had his arm around my daughters shoulder and that she was not very comfortable with this scenario, so I walked over and instructed Daisy to leave the table and I told this Individual to”Stay away from my Family and especially my children and that I would be watching him closely from that point on”
. Bearing in mind the problems we had to endure the year before, I hope that you can at least understand my reaction. After all we had managed to start to piece our life back together and the Children were taking part in Karaoke nights and Swimming Events within the complex to name but a few.
After this incident within the Cafeteria both Samantha and I noticed that Daisy had seemed to be very quiet and withdrawn and both of us regularly asked if she was ok and if everything was alright. Daisy would always respond yes everything if fine but Samantha and I were far from convinced of this.
Daisy came to see Samantha and I one particular Saturday evening a few weeks after this incident and she informed us that this Individual had in fact touched her in an inappropriate manner so I left the Caravan in order to remonstrate with this man but it was never my intention to be physically violent in anyway towards this Individual as I had no intention to cause a scene but alas our chat escalated and I lost my composure and regretfully struck him. After this incident in the Clubhouse, I went to our Caravan and waited for the police to arrive and I was arrested and charged with Assault at the police station. I made a full & frank statement admitting all charges I consequently went to Court and was given a 2 year suspended sentence…, 190 hours Community Service, 2 years probation and a £200 fine which I have since paid.
Within a week of this incident we were given a months notice to remove ourselves & Caravan from the site,
I tried to speak with the Site Manager who was never available (I did leave Messages constantly asking him to contact me) then I tried Contacting their Head Office to which once again I never received a response after leaving numerous messages
We had left letters explaining and apologizing for the incident involving this individual with the Site Office but no response ever came our way. Included in the letters to both the Site Manager and Head Office was a proposal that I subsequently was to be banned from the Site itself but have the option of Samantha and the Children staying on site so that they could continue to be happy with their friends and their education would not be affected.
The problems we experienced were very difficult as we could neither find a suitable means of moving our Caravan to another site nor at that time afford another deposit for us to move into a new one. I sadly informed the Children that it would be likely that we would be moving and informed their schools of this which in itself caused problems as they were halfway through term.
Within a few days of our Notice being served we had another tragedy involving our Caravan, I was cooking and our Caravan caught fire and left us with nothing as the whole place went up, we lost our clothes and all our possessions. I just thank the Good Lord that our children were at school at the time and that no-one was seriously hurt.
There is not a day goes by that I am wracked with guilt over my actions that night and I have not only paid the price financially for what happened but also psychologically as I believe it my fault for the problems and difficulties my family have faced over these last few years.
Due to the nature of my health since the Heart attack I have been unable to return to work but thanks to Samantha and the children I am hoping to get my health sorted so that I can provide for my family in the way that I used to and By “JUNE 2009” Samantha and I had decided to try our relationship afresh and we were married with all of our Children present including Daisy and Dolly as Bridesmaids and Frankie and Mickey both as Pageboys and despite our Family problems this was by far the happiest day over the previous five years if not the entire relationship between Samantha and I.
After the fire at our Caravan we managed to borrow some money from some close friends and family thus giving us the much needed deposit to purchase a other caravan at a different site also in Clacton-on-sea but maintaining a distance from our previous caravan park. With the money raised through friends and family we moved to our new caravan on HIGHFIELD GRANGE and stayed there every weekend since Samantha and I got married
We regrettably moved back to Enfield . It was great seeing that our children were happy again on this new site even though it was just for weekends
they had entered the Talent contest and even managed to reach the club finals which made both Samantha and I very proud & happy
Much to our surprise around September 2009 we were informed that Park Holiday had in fact purchased the Site from Park Resorts
Within a matter a weeks after our initial shock that Site ownership had changed hands we were stunned to discover that the Electric, Gas and Water had all been disconnected from our Caravan with no explanation given as to as reason of why
.The Children have begun to ask questions as to why we haven’t been going to our new Caravan since October and they even missed the Christmas party where all their new found friends had attended. as I have explained previously our children had got through to the Park’s Talent Contests and even had to endure missing the finals of the said competition. My Daughter Daisy had begun to blame herself over the problems that occurred and is currently receiving counseling and has said to us on numerous occasions that if she hadn’t told us what happened to her then everything would be alright and that her brothers and sisters would be happier because they could be involved in the Parks activities and be playing with their friends & attending school in Clacton
My Family and I have suffered over the last 5 years in a way that defies belief but we do our best to remain strong throughout but now with this latest episode that we are going through we are beginning to crack under the immense pressure that we now face yet again.
We are hoping that after Highfield Grange management have read through this letter you will consider reactivating our Gas, Electric and Water supply so that our family can move back to the Site and return a touch of normality to their everyday lives.
I look forward to hearing from you within the next 14 days
Yours sincerely
Samantha Pike (nee: Mcloughlin) Michael Pike
